Character Counter
Type or paste any text below to see live counts of total characters, characters without spaces, and characters without any whitespace at all — updated instantly as you type.
How to Use the Character Counter
- Type directly into the box, or paste text copied from anywhere.
- Watch the three character counts update live as you type or edit.
- Use "Excluding Spaces" when a platform's limit ignores spaces, and "Excluding All Whitespace" to see raw character density with no spaces, tabs or line breaks counted.
- Click "Clear Text" to start over.
Why Use This Tool?
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. This counter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere — it exists only in your browser tab and disappears the moment you close or refresh the page. There is no signup, no account, and no data upload of any kind.
Why do I need three different character counts?
Different platforms and forms count characters differently. Meta descriptions, SMS messages, and many form fields count every character including spaces. Some strict character-limited fields effectively ignore spacing when you're mentally budgeting your message. Seeing all three numbers side by side — total, no spaces, and no whitespace at all — means you never have to guess which count actually applies to the field or limit you're working against.
What exactly counts as "whitespace"?
Whitespace includes regular spaces, tabs, and line breaks (new lines). The "Excluding Spaces" figure removes only the regular space character, while "Excluding All Whitespace" strips spaces, tabs and line breaks together, leaving just the visible, non-blank characters in your text.
Who uses a character counter?
Copywriters fitting headlines into strict ad character limits, developers testing how form inputs behave at maximum length, students meeting assignment character caps, and social media managers double-checking a caption before it's cut off all rely on a fast, accurate character count. Because it updates live with no button to click, it's built for exactly that kind of quick, repeated check.
