Hash Comparison Tool
Verify that a file or piece of text matches an expected checksum. Either paste two hashes to compare directly, or compute a SHA-256 hash from text or a file and check it against a value you were given — all calculated locally in your browser.
How to Use the Hash Comparison Tool
- Choose "Compare Two Hashes" if you already have two hash values you want to check against each other.
- Choose "Compute Hash & Compare" to generate a fresh SHA-256 hash from typed text or an uploaded file, then compare it to a hash you were given (e.g. from a download page).
- Click the relevant button and review the ✅ Match / ❌ No Match result.
- Comparison ignores letter case, since hashes are commonly written in either upper or lower case.
Why Use This Tool?
Is my file or text uploaded anywhere?
No. Files are read locally using your browser's built-in FileReader API and hashed with the CryptoJS library, which runs entirely client-side. Nothing about your file's content, name, or the text you type ever leaves your device.
What library powers the hashing?
We load the open-source CryptoJS library (version 4.2.0) from the cloudflare CDN so your browser can run the SHA-256 algorithm. This is a static script file only — it does not send any of your data anywhere; all hashing computation happens locally after the script loads.
Why would I compare hashes?
Hash comparison is the standard way to verify integrity: after downloading a file, you can hash it yourself and compare the result to the hash published by the source. If they match, the file wasn't corrupted or tampered with in transit.
Why SHA-256 specifically?
SHA-256 is a modern, widely trusted hashing algorithm used throughout software distribution, package managers, and blockchain systems. It produces a fixed-length 64-character hexadecimal fingerprint that changes completely if even a single byte of the input changes.
