Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. This compressor runs entirely inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image is loaded locally, resized in memory, and re-encoded — it is never transmitted to any server, never stored, and never seen by anyone but you. This makes it safe for personal photos, ID scans, screenshots or anything else you'd rather keep private.
Why does my file get smaller?
Most compression happens through "lossy" re-encoding: the tool redraws your image and re-saves it as a JPEG at a chosen quality level, discarding some fine detail that's barely noticeable to the human eye. Lowering the quality slider increases compression but can introduce visible artifacts at extreme settings, so it's worth comparing the preview before downloading.
Will compressing reduce the image dimensions?
No — this tool only reduces file size through quality/compression adjustments. The width and height of your image stay exactly the same. If you also want to shrink the pixel dimensions, try our Image Resizer tool.
What's a good quality setting to use?
For web use (blog posts, product photos, social media), 0.6–0.75 usually gives a great balance of small file size and good visual quality. For printing or archiving, stay closer to 0.9–1.0 to preserve maximum detail.
