How to Use the Speech-to-Text Tool
- Click "Start Listening" and allow microphone access when prompted.
- Speak naturally — recognized words appear immediately, with unconfirmed words shown in lighter italic text until finalized.
- Click "Stop" whenever you're done, or keep speaking to keep appending text.
- Use "Copy Text" to copy the transcript, or "Clear" to start over.
Why Use This Tool?
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
Speech recognition is handled by your browser's built-in Web Speech API. Depending on the browser, some processing may occur via the browser vendor's own recognition service (this is standard behavior for browsers like Chrome, controlled entirely by your browser, not by us) — we never receive, store, or have access to your audio or transcript. The text only exists on this page unless you copy it yourself.
Why doesn't this work in my browser?
Speech recognition support varies widely across browsers. Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave) offer the most reliable support. Firefox and Safari have limited or no support for continuous speech recognition. If your browser isn't supported, this tool detects that immediately and shows a friendly message suggesting you try Chrome instead of failing silently.
What does the italic, lighter text mean?
That's "interim" text — words your browser has tentatively recognized but hasn't finalized yet. As you keep speaking, interim text is replaced with finalized (normal-style) text once the recognition engine is confident in the result. This is standard behavior for real-time speech recognition and helps you see progress as you speak.
What if I deny microphone access?
If you deny the microphone permission prompt, the tool shows a clear message explaining that microphone access is required for dictation, along with a note on where to re-enable it in your browser's site settings.
