Why Use This Tool?
How is the tip calculated?
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip % ÷ 100. Total Amount is the bill plus the tip. If splitting among a group, Amount Per Person = Total Amount ÷ Number of People. This matches how tips are typically calculated in restaurants, salons and other service settings.
What's a typical tip percentage?
Tipping norms vary by country and service type. In the United States, 15–20% is common for restaurant dining, with 18% often used as a default for good service. Some regions have no tipping culture at all, while others include a service charge automatically. Check local norms and your bill for any already-included service charges before tipping again.
Should I tip before or after tax?
This is a personal or regional preference — some people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, others on the total including tax. This calculator uses whatever "Bill Amount" you enter, so simply enter the subtotal or the total depending on your preferred method.
